Geography

I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.

Isaiah 45:12

Geography is a subject packed with excitement which explores the world and helps us to better understand its people, places and environments. It gives pupils the opportunity to travel the world from their own classroom and find out about the natural and human aspects that are all around them.

At St Hilda’s we will provide a high quality geography curriculum that will equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become enquiring and skilled geographers. All children, including Pupil Premium and SEND, will engage in a geography curriculum that will encourage and create an appreciation of how the world works and of the connections between concepts such as community, cultural diversity and sustainability. We look for opportunities to take children outside of the classroom to get ’hands on’ with geography and experience more diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments.

We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives, equipping them well for further education and beyond.

Our geography curriculum is well planned and key knowledge and skills have been identified and mapped across the school from EYFS to Year 6. This ensures that knowledge is built on progressively and that skills are developed systematically.

Our curriculum is delivered through our topic-based approach and pertinent links are made with other subjects.

Through these topics, pupils learn about:

  • Continents and Oceans of the world.
  • UK countries, their surrounding seas and their capital cities.
  • Identify and locate countries of the world.
  • Compare and contrast different regions in both the UK and worldwide.
  • Identify different weather patterns both in the UK and worldwide.
  • Use and understand geographical vocabulary – both physical and human features.
  • To use maps, atlases, globes and digital mapping to identify landmarks and human and physical features.
  • To use compass directions and directional language.
  • To identify environmental locations and key human and physical characteristics in the UK and across the world.
  • To learn mapping skills including grid references and topography.
  • To describe and understand key aspects of physical and human geography.
  • Fieldwork.

We believe that first-hand experiences of different places is vitally important and we provide opportunities for the pupils to visit areas both inside and outside of their locality; to go on field trips; visit the seaside; go to Manchester and take part in residentials.

Ongoing assessment takes place and pupils are assessed at the end of the year using Target Tracker.

We aim to ensure our pupils are competent geographers and equipped with geographical skills and  knowledge so that they are ready for the further study of this subject at high school and  beyond.
